We had an exciting week at TRS! It was filled with dancing, poetry, and fun. If you have unsold coupon booklets, please return them on Monday as well as any money you raised through sales.
Highlights of the Week:
Students learned to express themselves through movement and dance while building confidence and creativity. They explored the history and cultural significance of Hip-Hop and how it connects to music and trends today. Students developed their physical literacy by practicing coordination, rhythm, and body control. They learned to collaborate, take creative risks, and share their ideas respectfully as part of a dance community. Shout out to our instructor Keston for the positive vibes and fun week!
- ELAL – Students continue to practice using literary devices by creating an advertisement for a chosen object or experience. They also were introduced to writing poetry using a free verse style.
- Math – We reviewed fractions using manipulatives and built equivalent fractions. Students were then introduced to both mixed and improper fractions where they represented them using circle or bar fractions. They also learned how to convert fractions from mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa.
- Science –
- Grade 6 – we started our new unit this week, Earth Systems. Students learned the difference between biotic and abiotic factors within an ecosystem. They worked in small groups to learn about the main ecosystems throughout the world. Each group gave a brief overview of their ecosystem to the class, so students can dive deeper into a chosen ecosystem next week.
- Grade 5 – students continued their weather instrument project. They spent time with their groups building their chosen weather instruments. Students wrote a paragraph to accompany their model to show their understanding of how it works.
- Social –
- Grade 5 – We learned about perspective and how people can have different perspectives on the same issues or events. Students then analyzed an event/issue that occurred in both the past and present through different perspectives to see how we can learn from history.
- Grade 6 – They completed a check-in that consisted of multiple choice and short answer styles. Students were then introduced to our next unit which will be focusing on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
- Homework – converting and representing fractions worksheet.
- Math – Work on fractions.
- ELAL – Work on identifying themes within stories, movies and tv shows.

- PAT Review –
- We have had several comments and questions about PATs. We will begin review mid May and will be sending home review for Math and Science. You can access practice tests here: https://abed.vretta.com/#/en/public-practice
- Students will have plenty of opportunity to work on their reading and writing at school, however, here are some suggestions to support at home:
- Have your child plan a story in 10 minutes with a prompt/theme
- Give your child 20 minutes to write as much as they can towards a story
- Practice a preferred style of non-fiction writing when given a promptm including practice planning under a time constraint (persuasive, comparative, instructional, friendly letter, etc.)
- What to focus on – grammar, punctuation, paragraphing, complete sentences
- Students are given 2 hours to write both a fiction and non-fiction piece of writing during the PAT. They will be given an overarching topic, such as Friendship to write both pieces on. Typically, students will take 5-10 minutes to plan and organize their writing topic for each piece and then spend the remaining time typing their pieces.
- TRS Flex Time – Wednesdays until 4pm in the library with Mr. B and Ms. Hassen
