February 5, 2026

Balzac Billy told us we were going to have 6 more weeks of winter, but we are finding it hard to believe! What a lovely week at TRS.

Highlights of the Week:

  • ELAL – students were introduced to News Articles this week. We spent time looking at the different elements that make up a news article and their importance. Students have practiced identifying the 5 W’s and H of a news article to help them in planning their own. We brainstormed ideas about various school events we could report on and students are in the midst of planning and writing their first article.
  • Math – We practiced Box Method division this week and will continue with regular long division next week.
  • Science –
    • Grade 6 – students looked at Newton’s Third Law – every action has an equal and opposite reaction this week. They made cotton ball pinballs to demonstrate this law. Students looked at the difference between elasticity and plasticity of various objects. We also used our knowledge of all the forces to design and plan our own fidgets.
    • Grade 5 – students were introduced to buoyancy this week. They watched a video and had several discussions about how density can affect buoyancy.
  • Social –
    • Grade 5 – Students continued their learning about the Silk Road and how trading was more than exchanging goods.
    • Grade 6 – Grade 6 students learned about Canada’s Parliament and created their own parliament using famous and fictional characters.

Learning Intention of the Week – Pillow Hearts - Sewing

Students had an opportunity to try their hands at sewing today. We made mini heart pillows. Students were able to choose fabric, where they then drew a heart on the “wrong” sides of their fabric. Using a straight stitch they followed the outline to sew the pieces together, leaving a small opening. After, they flipped their hearts around and stuffed them before finishing them off.
